Photo: Three students at the graduation ceremonyThe counseling services at Henry Sibley are designed to support students with applying academic achievement strategies, managing emotions and applying interpersonal skills, and planning for postsecondary options, whether that is through higher education opportunities, the military, or work force. We are your students' advocate and here to help transition into high school and prepare them for a successful life after high school. 

This Month in the Guidance Office - On September 17th, Counselors led presentations for 10th grade parents and 11th and 12th grade parents in Warrior Hall before and after open house regarding academic and career/college planning information. These presentation are now available. September 12th, we went into senior classes to demonstrate how to request transcripts for college applications and letters of recommendations, as well as ensure seniors are aware of their credit needs for graduation. We are working with all students in individual meetings as needed to assist in the transition to a new school year.

2018 PSAT October 10th - Registration with begin on September 4. PSAT/NMQT stands for Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. It provides sophomore and juniors with practice for the SAT. More importantly, this is the opportunity for juniors to qualify for the National Merit Scholarship Corporation scholarship program. We encourage all 11th graders and those in the top 20% of the sophomore class to register. 

Sibley will administer the test, October 10. Students will be given information about the time and room to report for testing when they register. There is a $16 fee. Students need to register with the secretary in the Guidance Office. Registration opens on September 4 and is first come first served, and is open until all seats are filled. Fee waivers are available for eligible students in 11th grade who meet USDA income Eligibility Guidelines. If you have questions, please talk with your counselor.

College Visits to Sibley - Admissions representatives from various colleges come to Sibley throughout the year to meet with interested students. STudents can check the calendar outside of the Guidance Office, or log on to Naviance to see which colleges are visiting and sign up to meet with the college reps. This is a great opportunity to connect and learn.

ACT or SAT Scores for College Applications - If your child did not list the colleges they are applying to as a recipient of their scores when they took the test, they may need to request an official score be sent directly from ACT/SAT. If you have additional questions, please see your child's counselor for assistance. 

College Applications - Counselors will begin processing applications in September. If the college request letters of recommendations as part of the application, students should be sure to ask teachers early. Minnesota National College Fair - At the Minneapolis Convention Center, Wednesday, October 24, from 9:00 a.m to 12:00 p.m., and 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., and Thursday, October 25, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) sponsors this event, attracting representatives from over 350 colleges and universities and nearly 25,000 students and parents. The National College Fair offers a variety of informative sessions and panels to help students and parents navigate the college search and financial aid process. More information can be found at

Students electing to go during the school day are excused on Wednesday, October 24th, to go with the counselors on district-provided buses. There will be a $5 fee. If students want to go independently, they should attend on Wednesday evening. See the secretary in the Guidance Office for a permission form and to pay the fee. The deadline for paperwork is Wednesday, October 17. 

Post-Secondary Enrollment Options (PSEO) Students - Students who have enrolled in PSEO classes at local colleges are reminded to schedule an appointment with their counselor to update their schedule at Henry Sibley. We will need a copy of their PSEO courses for first semester before the start of the school year. Whether the student is taking an online or campus class. It is the student's responsibility to make sure they are taking the necessary credits to graduate. Financial Aid Changes - Students graduating in 2019 are able to file a 2019-20 FAFSA-the Free Application for Federal Student Aid-as of October 1, 2018, rather than beginning of January 1, 2019. The earlier submission date is a permanent change that began in 2016, enabling students to complete and submit a FAFSA as early as October 1 every year. This fall's FAFSA, submitted for students attending college in the 2019-2020 school year (including this year's graduating seniors), will use income and tax information from 2017.

Naviance's Family Connection - Students can use the comprehensive tools in Family Connection to plan for college and a career, and their school counselor can assist them along the way. Family Connection allows students to: get involved in the planning and advising process, research colleges and careers, create plans for the future, and prepare for the ACT and AP exams.

Family Connection also lets us share information with students about upcoming meetings and events, local scholarship opportunities, and resources for college and career information.
